Play Codenames online with friends — free, no signup

Two rival spy networks race to contact their agents first. Twenty-five code words sit face up on a five-by-five grid; only the two spymasters know which words belong to which side. Everything runs in the browser — create a room, share the five-letter code, and play on a phone or a laptop. There is nothing to download and no account to make.

How to play

  1. Split into two teams of at least two, and pick one spymaster each. Four players minimum, twelve maximum.
  2. The spymaster gives a one-word clue and a number — "MUSIC 3" means three words on the board relate to music.
  3. Their operatives tap the words they think are theirs. A correct guess lets them keep going, up to the number plus one.
  4. A wrong word ends the turn. Touch the assassin and your team loses on the spot.
  5. First side to contact all its agents wins.

Questions

How many people do I need?
Four at minimum — two per side, each with a spymaster. Up to twelve can play in one room, and it is better with more.
Is it free?
Yes, entirely. There is a donate button if you want to support the developer, but nothing is gated behind it.
Do I need to install anything or make an account?
No. It runs in any modern browser on desktop or mobile. One person creates a room and shares the code.
Can we play on one device, passing it around?
It is built for one device per player, because each spymaster sees information the others must not. Two players can share a computer using two browser tabs.
Can the other team see the answers?
No. The server only sends the colour key to the two spymasters, and reveals everything once the game ends.
▶ CREATE ROOM

A mission needs 4 agents minimum — 2 per side, each with a spymaster.

📖 HOW TO PLAY
  1. 25 code words sit in a 5×5 grid. Each secretly belongs to Westalis, Ostania, an innocent bystander, or the Assassin.
  2. Each side elects one Spymaster. Only they can see the colours — the server never sends the key to anyone else.
  3. The Spymaster transmits a one-word clue plus a number: "PEANUTS 2" means two of your cards relate to peanuts.
  4. Operatives tap cards. Right? Keep going, up to number + 1. Wrong? The turn ends at once.
  5. Touch the Assassin and your side loses instantly.
  6. Revealed cards show who was hiding there: Twilight (Westalis), Yor (Ostania), Anya (bystander) or the Assassin.
